Berry Campbell is pleased to present Stable Gallery: The Women at Independent 20th Century, marking the gallery's inaugural participation in the fair. This presentation examines Abstract Expressionism through the Stable Gallery’s founder, Eleanor Ward, and the women artists she championed. For decades, Abstract Expressionism has been mythologized through the figure of the heroic male painter, yet at the movement’s formation, its members were far more plural than later histories would suggest. This presentation further corrects the art historical record, demonstrating that women artists were always active participants in Abstract Expressionism and that these artists are not new discoveries but long-overdue acknowledgments.
